Have a Roach Problem? Our Pest Exterminators Can Help

Cockroach fossils have been dated as hundreds of millions of years old. Cockroaches have not been around for so long because of luck, but because they can adapt and thrive in most environments. This means that cockroaches are one of the hardest pests to eliminate.

There are thousands of cockroach species, but our Sacramento cockroach exterminators typically only see a couple species become indoor California pests. The most common indoor cockroach in California is the German cockroach. You may also find the brown-banded cockroach indoors.

Other cockroach species include the American cockroach, oriental cockroach, smokybrown cockroach and Turkestan cockroach. Though generally outdoor pests, they may come indoors too.

Signs of a Cockroach InfestationPicture of cockroach

You may have a cockroach infestation if you come across any of the following situations:

Live cockroaches. If you see one cockroach, chances are there are more cockroaches hiding. Most cockroach species, besides the American cockroach, prefer to live in packs.

Cockroaches are nocturnal, so you are more likely to see them at night. If you see cockroaches during the day, it may be because there is a large population of them.

Cockroach eggs. Cockroaches are avid breeders. If you find cockroach eggs in your house, you likely have an infestation.

Cockroaches lay multiple eggs at once in a casing called an ootheca. The ootheca of a German cockroach could contain up to 50 eggs.

Can Roaches Cause Respiratory Problems?

Unfortunately, cockroaches can leave behind waste that can disrupt our breathing.

Shedding/Molting. Over their lifetimes, cockroaches shed their exoskeletons multiple times. These moltings eventually breakdown and spread particles through the air.

Cockroach feces. Cockroach feces can look different depending on the species. For example, German cockroaches leave feces that looks like coffee grounds.

Check for feces in undisturbed cabinets and drawers. You may also look on top of cabinets or behind appliances. If you find feces in your home, our Sacramento pest exterminators can identify your pest.

Musty smell. Like other pest infestations, cockroaches have a musty smell. Cockroaches produce an odorous chemical to communicate with each other.

What Attracts Cockroaches in Your Home?

Cockroaches have three main needs: food, water and shelter. Unfortunately, your home has all three. Each species of cockroach has its own preferences.

German cockroach. The German cockroach prefers warm and humid areas that are near food and water sources. Generally, they are found in kitchen and bathroom areas.

Brown-banded cockroach. The brown-banded cockroach prefers warmer environments than the German cockroach. They may live near warm appliances or in unairconditioned spaces. Brown-banded cockroaches prefer starches. They will eat the glue from envelopes, stamps and wallpaper.

What Can I Do to Get Rid of Cockroaches?

Eliminating your cockroach infestation will depend on the species in your home. You need to know which species you are dealing with in order to apply an effective control plan. Our Sacramento cockroach exterminators have highlighted some tips below for cockroach control.

Eliminate water sources. Cockroaches can only live a few days without water. Even so, a very small amount of water can keep them alive.

Do you have leaky pipes or faucets? These are a great water source for cockroaches. Check water build-up in drains and avoid leaving wet sponges out.

Eliminate food sources. Store your food in airtight containers. Keep countertops clean by wiping them down each night. Clean underneath and behind appliances for crumbs.

You should also keep your trash in a sealed container and take it out daily. Keep trash bins away from your house. Once you eliminate food sources, you could try baits to control the population.

Eliminate shelter. Cockroaches can enter your home through cracks, gaps and drain pipes. Look for potential entryways and seal them.

The more hiding spots you can find and clean up, the better you will be able to control the cockroach population. Seal cracks in the walls. Clean up clutter and check undisturbed places.

Monitor with traps. Traps will not get rid of an infestation, but they can help you track the population size. Traps could also help you find where the cockroaches are living and hiding in your home.

Call a cockroach exterminator. Cockroaches reproduce quickly and hide in hard-to-reach places. Managing an infestation on your own could be overwhelming.

Our Sacramento cockroach exterminators can identify your pest problem. We can determine where the cockroaches are hiding and how they are entering your home. We can implement an effective control plan so you can live the pest-free life you deserve.
